01/24/2017 Council Preview – Blue Bonnet and SSCDs

This agenda is all over the place.

We start the evening with a closed session involving property negotiations for the remaining half of the Corn Palace.  This is followed by a closed session involving the City Attorney’s performance review.

The general session starts with special orders of the day to swear in the new Mayor and Vice Mayor.  The consent calendar is a big one since we’ve gone a while without a meeting.  We’ve got an increase in a contract for NOVA-related services.  There’s a reimbursement agreement for street improvements at Maude and Mathilda related to a nearby development project.  There’s an increase in a contract for temporary fire inspection services.  There’s a temporary easement agreement related to the Fair Oaks Overpass rehabilitation.  We’re increasing legal agreements related to litigation over Summit Schools, and another one involving ongoing labor negotiation services.  There’s a required agreement with the State involving UUT collection.  We’ve got a contract for leasing golf carts.  There’s a contract to rehab the Fair Oaks Park building, as well as replacing the skate park lights with energy efficient lights.  And then there’s the second reading of an ordinance.

Public Works, Up Close And Personal

I got first-hand exposure to Sunnyvale’s Public Works staff last night, when the rain split a forked redwood tree on the court nearest to me and took down half the tree into the street, blocking all access.  The first I heard was when a neighbor texted me photos of the downed tree.  She’d already contacted Public Safety, so there wasn’t anything for me to do.  She filled me in on what was happening until I got off work and returned home.  Checking it out, it was pure luck that nobody was hurt and no property was damaged.  The tree missed all parked cars, and nobody was out walking since it was raining.  It was kind of a big deal because it blocked off all street access to sixty or so homes.  There was a back way in, through another complex’s driveway, but a lot of new residents probably don’t know about it.  Condo complexes can be a bit of a maze.

Hard Numbers on How SVCEA Will Change Your Future PG&E Bills

At last night’s meeting of the Silicon Valley Clean Energy Authority, we approved a resolution establishing the electricity rates that will be charged to customers starting April 1 of this year.  We now have some hard numbers that can be quoted to you, so you can know what impact you can expect SVCEA to have on your PG&E bill.

01/10/2017 Council Preview – New Council, Study Issues

Happy New Year!  Sorry for the delay – I’ve been wrestling with fixing my Twitter/FB integration.

We start the evening with no study or closed sessions. Instead, we start by certifying the results of the November election.  We then say goodbye to the departing councilmembers and swear in the newly-elected councilmembers.

Sunnyvale Preparation for Weekend Storms

You’ve probably heard that we’re bracing for a series of storms to hit us this weekend.  Here is what the City of Sunnyvale is doing to prepare the City and its residents for these storms.

Water and Sewer Systems staff have been notified that they may be called in to respond to issues. Our standby staff in the Wastewater Collections Program will also be available 24×7, as part of our normal operations.

Public Safety will staff the Emergency Operations Center during peak hours of the storm, and take action as appropriate.  DPS will push out information through Nixle for our community to be aware of any incidents that may impact our streets or key areas of service.

As background, staff has been preparing for winter storms over some time.  For example, staff has already cleaned out all the trash capture devices and over 4,200 storm catch basins. As a precaution, the two Storm Pump Stations are being inspected today to ensure that the pumps are ready and the screens are clear.

Additionally, we’re preparing a supply of sand bags for public use.  The City will provide details on this and other storm-related planning and news through its normal information channels when they become available.  So keep an eye on Facebook, Twitter, and Nixle for more up-to-date news.
