An article at wallstreetcheatsheet.com tells us what we already knew – it’s very expensive to live here. Our metro area was ranked fourth most expensive in the nation. The top four are
- Honolulu, HI
- Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY
- New York, Northern New Jersey, Long Island, NY-NJ-PA
- San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA
The article goes on to say that our Consumer Price Index (CPI) has increased 2.4% in just the last 12 months, which not only reflects what we pay for stuff, but will also affect all sorts of municipal and other expenses that are CPI-based. The article singles out the high cost of goods and high rents in this area as major factors for our ranking.
But really, Poughkeepsie? We couldn’t beat Poughkeepsie?

Hey Jim. Can you share that news with the mayor and council in San Jose as they expect me to take another 16% (of gross total comp salary) pay cut?
Mike: I’ll get right on it.
